MY PRIORITIES FOR SAANICH
In this period of economic uncertainty and rising costs, I believe Council needs to be cautious with spending. The budget should reflect the priorities of our community and address Saanich's most important needs.
We need to take care of the services and infrastructure people rely on every day, while making sure new projects are practical, evidence based and improve the quality of life in Saanich. Growth is important, but it needs to be balanced with affordability and financial sustainability.
If elected, I'll look for more funding opportunities through partnerships and business initiatives, as a way to reduce reliance on property tax revenues and help keep future tax increases minimal.
Budget
Creating more affordable housing options in Saanich is a priority. The addition of secondary suites or single units on residential properties makes sense to achieve that goal, as does having larger developments in locations where impacts on traffic and residential parking are minimal.
Growth needs to be planned responsibly. While provincial legislation, like Bill 44, has reduced Council's ability to shape certain developments, I believe new housing should fit the character of the neighbourhoods where it is built and avoid creating unnecessary challenges for existing residents.
If elected, I will work diligently to support responsible housing development while trying to protect the quality of life in Saanich and not losing sight of our neighbourhoods.
Housing
Traffic congestion is a major issue. While work has been done to improve traffic flow on our Greater Victoria highways in recent years, traffic in our municipality has gotten worse with the reduction of speed limits and vehicle lanes.
Safe roads are very important. That said, many of the measures taken, including speed reductions on major corridors, some traffic calming initiatives, and raised bike lane barriers on certain roads, have worsened congestion, affected emergency response times and impacted bus transit.
If elected I would like to find a way to rectify these issues and work on supporting a variety of transportation options for our residents.
Traffic
Saanich has great parks and rec centres. The indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities are part of what makes our municipality a great place to live.
Activities and programs that keep Saanich residents healthy and allow people of all ages to enjoy life are important. Recreation should be financially and physically accessible while making sure public resources are well managed. I believe keeping our parks safe and well-maintained while also having designated spaces for pets to play promotes a positive community environment.
If elected, I will aim to make sure adequate budgeting is in place to manage our parks and recreation services, as they are an important part of our Saanich culture.
Parks and Rec
Hi, I’m Nic Renaud. I’m running for Saanich Council because I’m interested in supporting the community that has been home to me for my entire life.
I’m currently working with provincial government employees through a local non-profit providing fitness and wellness programs. Previously, I worked in data management and implementation for two years, where I developed the skills needed to take on new challenges, learn quickly, and help organizations build better systems. I think these experiences and skills have prepared me to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of being a Council member. Good ideas and hard work lead to positive change. That’s what I want to bring to local government, whether it’s improving traffic flow, planning infrastructure, or strengthening community services.
I believe having a young voice on Council matters. If all generations are represented, together we can build a Saanich that supports everybody and focus on making a real impact.
